Ender Wiggins is born as the third child in his family, brother of Valentine and Peter Wiggins. Valentine is an intelligent, caring sister, who takes care of Ender while he is young, while Peter is power-loving sociopath who abuses Ender throughout his childhood. Ender's childhood is closely monitored by the International Fleet, the global military organization, he is eventually selected to attend Battle School, a military training academy located in space designed to train young potential commanders to fight against a threatening alien species, the Formics, who are currently at war with Earth. Commander Graff, Ender's recruiter and supervisor, realizes his enormous potential, and guides him through his initial attendance in Battle School. There, Ender soon reveals his military and tactical genius by leading his squadron in a zero-gravity war simulation. Meanwhile, back on Earth, Peter Wiggins is developing his political status by writing anonymous and controversial papers, and plans to take control of multiple governments through his politically centered documents. Soon, Ender is promoted to Command School, which involves skipping several intermediate stages of training in the process. There, a respected former military commander, Mazer Rackham, trains Ender through war simulations, with Rackham commanding virtual Formic ships. He eventually gives him a 'final test', in which Ender is presented with a war simulation where he is almost hopelessly outnumbered. Realizing this, Ender sacrifices some of his ships to succeed in defeating the opposing fleet. After, Rackham soon reveals to Ender that the test was not a simulation, and was an actual battle that took place in space. Ender had committed xenocide, killing all of the Formic ships and the alien species, ending the war.k#$`b@<@ y??Times New Roman ::Review: This book is very fast paced, and the author is able to push the story line so that it introduces events that contribute to both the storyline and the development of the characters. The author develops the main character, Ender Wiggins, very well in this novel, and integrates the plot and Ender's thoughts very well throughout the story. Ender's personality, especially his attitude towards Battle School, changes throughout the story as he faces many challenges. He changes from an uncertain, observant child to a certain, decisive character who almost seems 'beyond' the training he is in. It was also very interesting how the author adds a small section to the beginning of each chapter to explain background events that occur in different places, and contribute to the development of the plot. The author also does very good job in the rising action of the plot into developing very mature and ethical problems such as the xenocide of an alien species or genetic engineering of humans expressed throughout the story that will continue into the rest of the series. I thought this book was very exceptional, and I enjoyed the pace the author employed throughout the book. The plot developed very quickly, but the author allowed time for the character to develop and the reader to better understand the situation Ender was in.k#${@l@1F??Times New Roman Details List: Author: Orson Scott Card Publisher: Tor Books Year: 1985 Main Characters: Ender Wiggin, Hyrum Graff, Valentine Wiggin, Peter Wiggin, Mazer Rackham Awards Received: Nebula Award, Hugo Award, Margaret A.
